Other Info Adelard has a rather unusual appearance for a mer. His lower body is similar to that of a deep-sea creature, with dark scales and bio-luminescent spots along the sides. They're also present along his arms, body, and tendrils. Yep. Tendrils. By some freakish union of genetics his mother's traits passed down along with his father's, haphazardly covering much of his body in violet tendrils, much like an anemone. They're not really supposed to be there, so they have no uniform length or pattern, but they're in his hair, the left side of his face, his arms, and especially along the body and lower half. He also has something similar to an anglerfish's lure dangling from his forehead. It reaches out and in the middle of his field of vision. It can be annoying, but its light is useful for navigating in the dark. Perhaps because of this he developed an interest in the inner workings of other beings. Why didn't he end up just one way or the other like his older brother? How do other traits play out? In other organisms? When he grew older this turned into a desire to delve into what some might call genetics. His family lives in one of the deepest parts of Kaze, and their ancestors were well-known and a bit similar to nobility, if mer even have that. Regardless, their past reputation and their present reputation of being frightening and wealthy have given them quite an ego. Add is no exception to this. He's stuck up -- and also a huge jerk. His father was mentally ill. It was a well-kept secret, but no one could deny that he was a bit off. He saw things and heard things that didn't exist. His delusions drove him to start attacking ships. Despite the family's efforts to keep him in the deep waters, one time he slipped away and went towards the surface. The only thing that came back down was his dead, harpooned body. Adelard was young at that time, and he had been fond of his dad (much more than his overbearing and narcissistic mother). He wasn't told anything about his father besides him being sick, so his death came as a shock. He's been terrified of humans and the surface ever since. He's also been terrified of his own mental state. He's prone to nightmares, and sometimes he swears that the waters carry odd whispers in their currents, and it isn't just his overactive imagination. As a result he hasn't left his little pocket of ocean in Kaze, despite his wish to explore and find more of the ocean's lifeforms to study. He's too afraid that he'll go nuts out there, start hallucinating, and end up dying terrified and confused. As a result, he lives a rather sedentary lifestyle for a mer, and damn is it boring. Still, it's safe. He records his findings on rocks, and even has a few corrals set up for fish he wants to breed. He's...happy, and he certainly doesn't need to deal with his mother's nagging. However, he still isn't satisfied. What is he supposed to do, live his days out getting fat (as if he wasn't already on the chubbier side) and forever feeling like he didn't accomplish anything? Maybe he could just go up to the surface? It's scary, but what else does he have to do...? IB, garry, adelard tycho vaulli |
