It was nearing nighttime, and the ocean was beautiful. The last bits of the setting sun painted the waters orange. There were very few clouds, and the moon was just starting to become more visible. With no storms or winds the waters were calm. Waves gently lapped against the few remaining bits of land around Kaze. Yet in the waves, as the darkness drew closer, something else could easily be seen: lights. Adelard had picked a good day for his first venture to the surface. It was on impulse, really. In the murk of his waters he looked up above. The fish weren't busy. He hadn't seen any mer that day. All he could see was a straight path towards the light, and the realm of air he hated so much. Yet today was different. His curiosity was starting to get the better of him -- or perhaps his boredom. What did he need to go up there for? There wasn't anything important. Yet all the same he found himself swimming up and even further up. The pressure grew less oppressive; the water up here quite literally felt lighter. He could tell daylight was nearly gone. The waters were grey instead of blue, and he couldn't see the wavering sun. But wouldn't this mean that it would be more difficult to spot danger? Go back. It's not safe. The warning, mostly his own thoughts lingering on the cautious side, sounded loud and clear. This time, he ignored it. After all, he was just as difficult to see, and he felt far too close to the surface to back out. His tail pushed with even more force. The line between the waves and the surface was so close now, he could practically touch it... Near the small strip of land, a small bump slowly rose out from the waves. Damp hair, interspersed with tendrils, clung to his face. His lure fell limp, falling over the bridge of his nose. Adelard opened his eyes. It was warm up here. And uncomfortable. He'd probably have better first impressions if he could see anything. Instead it was just water everywhere, from the looks of it. The setting sun's reflection did look pretty, but other than that-- Adelard looked towards a raised shadow in the distance. Just what was that thing? He began to swim closer, and with him, the lights. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

[words: 374][tagged: adelard!] Jason picked his way carefully across the rocks at the water’s edge, judging each gap (small enough that a grown man could have stepped from one to the next, but a bit more intimidating for Jason’s short legs) before hopping to the next rock. He wasn’t going anywhere in particular, just exploring. His parents didn’t like him going off on his own, but Jason had overheard them talking earlier. The island was empty but for some mermaids in the surrounding waters; so, in Jason’s opinion, as long as he stayed out of reach of the water he would be just fine. So that was his plan. And he wasn’t too worried about finding his way back, either; follow the coast like he had on the way out and it would be easy, assuming his parents didn’t come along and find him first (which was the more likely outcome). So engrossed was Jason in his rock hopping that he didn’t notice the sun going down until he came to the end of the rocks and noticed the way the light had changed on the water. He looked up, squinting into the sunlight, trying to judge how much time he had before it went down, and how long the light would last after it did. After a moment, he shrugged inwardly. He didn’t feel like going back, therefore, long enough. Jason hopped down off the last rock and onto a small strip of beach. Though he’d grown up on the ship and was as comfortable (if not more so) on the water as he was on land, he actually wasn’t all that familiar with the feel of sand under his feet. He usually only got to get off the boat when there was a town, and if there was a town than there was a dock. He squatted down and ran hands through the sand, letting it trickle through his fingers and smiling slightly at the way it tickled. A small splash, out of sync with the relatively regular rhythm of the waves, made Jason look up. He peered out at the water, struggling to see past the sunlight reflecting off of it, and thought he could make out a darker shape moving towards him. ”Hello?”curiosity killed the cat satisfaction brought it back

Being underwater, Adelard couldn't hear Jason's call. However, he could see the dark figure move. It looked...human. He was terrified of humans. There wasn't exactly an aura of danger around that figure, however. From what he could see, it even looked small. He took a deep breath. This was it. Tonight he wouldn't just skitter back down to his abode. No, he'd investigate. He made his way through the waters, observing the seafloor rise closer and closer to him. It was starting to get shallow...and he was a little bit concerned. What if he got stuck? Some of the rocks and shells looked dangerously sharp -- he didn't dare entertain the thought of what would happen if he poked himself on one of those. Regardless, he kept on, and reached a point where the water became a bit too shallow for his comfort. A couple paces more, and he wouldn't be able to swim underwater completely. He poked his head above the water again. Violet eyes stared at the figure, who was now far closer. They looked male (probably), and seemed to be...a child? That seemed likely to him. Overall, very harmless looking. The merman didn't bother to greet the boy in return. He just began the questions -- he was a researcher, after all. "You're...human, right?" Talking above water felt odd, as if his vocal cords were more airy somehow. The tendrils in his hair wriggled slightly in annoyance, though they were noticeable enough. It wasn't every day those were seen on a mer. ((aah sorry for the wait! ive been busy with life and just kind of exhausted. i hope this post is alright!)) MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

[words: 287][tagged: adelard!] Jason peered at the water, tilting his head this way and that to try and see past the shimmering reflections of the setting sun. He tried shading his eyes, but that didn’t help. He tried hopping a couple of feet to one side, and that helped a little, but the water shifted so much that any spot he could see for a moment was downright blinding the next. Still, with the few glimpses he managed to get, he thought he could see a vague shape moving closer. A mermaid? Oh, he hoped so – he’d heard about them, but so far in his short life he’d never seen one, and he had so many questions. Still, his father had told him to be careful, so Jason scooted back a little in the sand until the highest waves (which weren’t very high at all, as the sea was fairly calm) still fell a foot or so short of where he stood. And then, suddenly, a head broke the water not far from Jason. His eyes went big and round as he took in the other’s strange appearance. Definitely a mermaid. Merman? Merman. And Jason wasn’t the best at figuring out other people’s feelings, but the merman didn’t look like he meant any harm. Surely he would have come closer if he wanted to do something mean, right? ”Yep,” Jason answered the other’s question matter-of-factly, managing through some major feat of willpower to keep the ‘duh’ mostly out of his voice. ”And you’re a merman.” He didn’t bother to make it a question. The merman’s hair moved a little, and Jason forgot his caution in fascination, moving closer to the water to get a better look. ”Did your hair just wiggle?”((no worries! I know that feel, man)) curiosity killed the cat satisfaction brought it back

"No, it didn't." Adelard responded in an equally matter-of-fact matter to the boy's question. "My tendrils did." He tended to be a very literal person. His pedantic nature was useful when observing a sea creature's skeletal structure, typically after dissecting it, but around other people? He just became downright unsociable at times. He wouldn't go into any detail beyond the basics concerning his anatomy, however. There was certainly a lot to wonder about, from his lure to his bioluminescence, but he didn't feel as if he had a need to diverge this information. It was this young human child that needed the examining, in his point of view. And so, he'd get down to specifics. "Why are you out on this rock?" In all seriousness though, it was a legitimate question. Kaze was a region which hosted most of its wonders underwater. Given the size of this tiny island, he really had to wonder why something that seemed so young was gallivanting about. Maybe he was abandoned? Mer did that sometimes if they couldn't afford to feed another mouth, and the children either starved or were eaten by something else -- occasionally even other mer. Sad, but true. Given his father's accounts of them, he wouldn't doubt such a possibility. However, he'd wait to see what the human's response was. It might be helpful to know that he wasn't going to be harpooned in an ambush or anything. That wasn't a likely possibility anyway...right? Whatever. Thinking about that stuff would just freak him out. MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS & THQ

[words: eh][tagged: adelard!] Jason blinked, one hand going to his own hair unconsciously. ”Tendrils?” Now he was curious. What did he mean, tendrils? Jason moved a little closer to the water, trying to get a better look at the merman’s head. It didn’t really work, so after a moment, Jason couldn’t help but ask the question. ”What kind of tendrils? Like jellyfish, or what?” He’d seen plenty of sea creatures in his short life, after all, but he still had no idea what the merman was talking about, and no petty annoyance like manners would get in the way when he had a question that needed answering. At the merman’s question, Jason realized how close he was to the water and retreated a couple of steps; just in time, too, as a wave washed over the spot he’d been standing in. His shoes would have been damp, and wet shoes were pretty much the worst thing ever. That didn’t stop him from answering the question, however. ”Exploring.” It occurred to him that the merman might be trying to figure out if he was alone (and therefore vulnerable), so he continued after a slight pause in a casual tone. ”My dad’ll probably come looking for me soon. He doesn’t like it when I go off by myself.” Jason thought it was silly of him, since he could obviously take care of himself, but it at least came in handy in this situation. curiosity killed the cat satisfaction brought it back
